At Peak Vets, we also host regular blood donation drives
for dogs. The blood is collected and stored by Pet Blood Bank UK (PBBUK),
a charity established to provide a blood bank for the use of vets throughout
the country. This means that every 2-3 months we hold a blood donation
drive where dogs come into the surgery and blood is collected. The blood
is then taken back to the laboratory of PBBUK where tests are performed
to ensure that the blood is free of disease and to determine the blood
type. The blood is then stored and made available to vets all around the
country to use on dogs that urgently require blood transfusions.
The blood donation is a relatively painless procedure and
most dogs settle quickly while donating. They also quite enjoy the toys
and treats they receive after donating. If you would like your dog to
donate blood or for further information, contact us at the surgery.
